School of You CIC, Ribble Valley

  • The Opportunity

School of You CIC supports individuals to build confidence, develop new skills and strengthen community connections through creative learning.

Together, People's Print and School of You delivered a series of creative workshops for displaced Ukrainian women, offering a welcoming space where participants could reconnect with their creativity whilst celebrating the traditions and cultural heritage they brought with them.

The project recognised that creativity can transcend language, providing a shared way to communicate, connect and express identity.

  • The Workshops

Across a series of workshops, participants explored drawing, painting, printmaking and experimental mark-making inspired by traditional Ukrainian folk art and embroidery.

Using symbolic motifs, decorative patterns and personal interpretation, the workshops encouraged experimentation and collaboration while honouring each participant's own experiences and creative voice.

No previous artistic experience was needed. The emphasis was on enjoying the creative process, building confidence and creating something meaningful together.

  • From Process to Pattern

The artwork developed during the workshops became the starting point for a collection of original surface pattern designs.

Individual painted marks, printed motifs and hand-drawn details were carefully refined into professional repeat patterns whilst preserving the distinctive character of each participant's contribution.

The resulting designs combine contemporary surface pattern design with traditional cultural influences, creating products that celebrate heritage, creativity and shared experiences.

  • The Outcome

The finished artwork is currently being transformed into a collection of professionally manufactured textile and homeware products, demonstrating how community-created artwork can become beautifully designed commercial products.

The project created a lasting legacy that celebrates both the creativity of the participants and the rich cultural traditions that inspired the work.

It also highlighted the importance of creating welcoming spaces where creativity can foster confidence, belonging and connection.
