Paint! Pattern! Print! - A celebration of Collier and Campbell's Creativity.

Paint! Pattern! Print! - A celebration of Collier and Campbell's Creativity.

Earlier in May, I visited the Paint, Pattern & Print exhibition at the Fashion & Textile Museum in Bermondsey and honestly, I left feeling completely inspired.

The work of Susan Collier and Sarah Campbell was extraordinary. Such a beautifully curated exhibition that showcased not only the final designs, but the craft, thinking and sheer skill behind exceptional surface pattern design.

What struck me most was the visibility of the maker throughout the work. The hand, the marks, the rhythm, the flow of repeat. You could feel decades of observation, refinement and understanding embedded into every pattern.

Having studied in the 90s and early 00s, this felt incredibly nostalgic too. It reminded me of those long studio days cutting repeats by hand, drawing, painting, testing colourways and learning how patterns truly work. A refreshing reminder of the level of craft involved before computers and AI became central to design processes.

It genuinely reminded me why I find print design so fascinating and specialised and why I care so deeply about preserving the value of the designer’s hand through People’s Print.

A truly joyful exhibition and one I’d highly recommend seeing.
